Year 5’s First Unit of Inquiry

The first unit of inquiry for our Year 5 students this year centers on conflict and peace. Students have discussed what makes them unique and different and have been set the task to design and construct a creative mask that shows aspects of our own cultures and homelands.

First, students built a frame out of card that fit their own face. Then they used newspaper and glue to build up the layers of their mask with paper mache. Students also connected their masks to another piece of cardboard and cut it in the shape of something synonymous with their cultures. Finally, they painted their masks, and decorated them with pictures from their homelands.
