Students Benefit from Bespoke Career Advice

Year 12 and 13 students at ACG School Jakarta received personalised one-to-one career advice from international career coaching service, Swivel Careers, who came from New Zealand to provide students guidance on making choices around their future.

ACG School Jakarta is the only school in Jakarta to have offered Swivel Careers’ programme.

Over two weeks, the course assessed students’ personality, skill-set, interests and ambitions to provide career and study information – and even relevant work experience.

Students said it helped them understand more about themselves, opened their mind to options and helped prepare them for future decision making.

The course is part of a wider school strategy around student support and the provision of a strong pastoral care programme for college level students. It also aligns with the school’s tutor programme.

“What I’m concerned about is making sure our students have the best, most current advice and options open to them,” said principal Shawn Hutchinson. “We spent a lot of time putting together the programme in advance of bringing Swivel over from New Zealand, so the course is developed specifically for our students.”

He said it was beneficial for students to have an impartial, non-family adult to talk to and provide them with options they may not have considered, particularly when results don’t work out as expected.

One Year 13 student said the service had provided insightful advice. “The career coaches were friendly and encouraging. I was able to learn more about myself as well as receiving personalised analysis and guidance for my future through this programme. It was certainly a great experience.”

Swivel’s Kate Ross who helped develop the programme for ACG School Jakarta said the days of a guidance counsellor spending ten minutes a year with each student were gone.

“It’s no longer a case of filling out a questionnaire and simply watching a computer spit out an answer.”
