On Thursday 12 April, Primary parents were invited for a coffee morning in the staffroom to discuss mathematics in the PYP. The session was hosted by Jennifer Kesler and Darren Aitchison. We were happy to have about 20 interested and eager parents attend, and it was fascinating to hear their own preconceptions and opinions about mathematics. We discussed the PYP’s beliefs and values about mathematics, and how good practice in mathematics is structured through a cycle of constructing meaning, transferring meaning and applying with understanding. We broke down the mathematics curriculum, learning about the various strands that are comprised in our programme and what they encompass. We also conversed about both the need for stand-alone mathematics instruction and a transdisciplinary approach, whereby we integrate mathematics with other subject areas and units of inquiry.
This is our third Parent Education Session this semester. We understand the importance for parents to learn what’s going on in their child’s classroom and how the teachers approach instruction. To help parents access the resources and support they need, we offer a series of relevant parent education sessions. These sessions prove invaluable to our parents, for they gain additional information.
